Plan for the joy of the process and not the end result

I have listened to a lot of educational material recently regarding planning and looking at the positive changes vs focusing on the negative. I was also reminded by my own coach that I need to celebrate the wins along the process vs only concentrating on the end result. In order to do this, I need to get organized and follow a plan.

I used to cringe when people wanted me to plan out everything. How could I be spontaneous and fun if everything was scheduled out? I still like to be able to fly by the seat of my pants, but I’m learning that having a plan in place can actually help me achieve my goals faster than not having a plan. This is especially true when working toward fitness goals.

In fitness, it’s important to make a plan. What do you want to achieve in a year? A quarter? A month? A week? Having a plan will help you break the big goals down into chunks.

Fitness is a journey. Sometimes we need to course correct while keeping our eyes on the end result. Enjoying the process along the way is really the bigger goal. And that is what makes planning fun. Set your big plan. Break it down in chunks…aka periodization (see my previous post)…and build as you go. I do think it’s helpful to see where the pitfalls will be so you are able to plan for them and plan a way to overcome them. For instance, if your goal is to look good in an outfit in 3 months, but you know you have a big birthday party next month. If you plan your workouts and your meals until that day, and after, you have a way to overcome the splurge that should happen in fun. You enjoy working to get to the goal and you also get to enjoy the party.

What your plan is really depends on where you are at now. Make an assessment of how you move and what it feels like. Find 3 things you are doing well. Then note one aspect you need to improve. How will you get there? Do you need a coach or will you stick to your plan on your own?

Each morning, review what you will accomplish that day. Visualize success. See your goals for the day achieved and hold onto what it feels like. Then go thru every thing that might stand in your way, and plan for how you will overcome that obstacle, and again visualize how you will achieve your goal.

We can’t control everything, but we can control how we respond. Having a plan in place allows us to recognize a challenge and gives us a way to make it better. This is true in every aspect of life and I plan to be better at planning, visualizing and making those dreams come true. You?
